Is my mum right about my hair colour?

I have recently had my hair dyed bright red. I love it and everyone says it really suits me. My mum hates it. For some reason she has always wanted me to go blond. She thinks there is a new product that will make my hair blond that doesn't contain bleach. I think this is impossible. My hair is naturally med/dark brown.

It would be nice to make mum happy for once, but I dont want to damage my hair.

Have you heard of any such product??

It is virtually impossible to take hair more than 2 shades lighter without first lifting color from the inside of the cuticle. For this you need bleach, ammonia, or some chemical. However...Matrix does make a color lifter that has is not a bleach product although it does contain ammonia. It is called SoColor and depending on your natural base colors, can take you to a very light blonde without bleach. The color is still "lifted" from your cuticles but it is gentler. That is what they use to gently lift my hair when I have highlights done.

hope this helps x

your mom just wants you to be boring. But just to make it more suitable for her dye it a lighter color red or maybe a strawberry blonde. Strawberry blonde is like a mixture between red and blonde. Its soooooo cute! If its as cute on you as it is on your avatar keep it like that.

As any good hairdresser will tell you, which my sis is, it's not easy to get med/dark brown hair to be blonde. There's a lot of chemistry involved in this. It does so much damage to your hair too. Basically, turning from a brunette to a blonde involves stripping the color from your hair shaft, similar to stripping paint of a piece of wood. If everyone else thinks the red suits you, I say stick with that. I have dark brown hair and have gone blonde (it wreaked so much havoc with my hair that I actually had to get it cut EXTREMELY SHORT in order to get it healthy again. It literally felt like a bale of old hay, especially in the shower! I've since gone back to my natural color, and THEN dyed it a nice coppery rich red, which everyone just loves on me, including myself (not to sound conceited). It's the best color for me, that's for sure. Hope this helps!

yup its the new loreal stuff, actually it says it has no amonia, but it will contain peroxide which is the bleach (i think that's what she means anyway) just look in boots or superdrug :D you shouldn't do what your mum wants you to do, only do it if you want to do it aswell. otherwise you'll feel like a puppet lol :) x

I started dying %26amp; back %26amp; forth bleaching my hair when I was sixteen. It became a adiction for me. Just saying it doesnt make sense but after thirty years of doing this one day I just decided enough %26amp; quit. My hair looks great %26amp; Im much happier. ( by the way I aware of the "new" supposed to be safe dyes %26amp; bleaches but that is bogus they are all bad for us just stop while your ahead %26amp; enjoy you natural color)

whats wrong with your natural colour, I like red, its a sign of wild, which is probably why your mother hates it! If you over 18 do what you like, shes only jealous!

It is so hard for dark hair to go blond. I can't fathom any other way besides bleach. HOWEVER, my sister in law put in blond highlights for me UNDER my hair (so that when I wore it down it was still my natrual dark color, but when up or braided pieces of blond came through, also when curled, SUPER cool look...) Then recently I got bored with my hair again and wanted some color back into it. Went to a hairdresser and he saw the ends of my hair that still had the blond and he said, "Hmm, she must have used bleach" which makes me think that now they can do it without bleach! I didn't go blond, but I had these beige/dirty blondish highlights put in all the way around my hairline. So again, when I wear down it's all dark (except for my side part that has a streak of blondish in it) but when I wear it up it looks like my entire head is highlighted.

If you do decide to go lighter for your moms sake, remember that it'll really dry out your hair. AG has a really good leave in conditioner that smells great called Fast Food - I love it and use it even in the winter.

Do your own thing, I've just spent 50 years getting my hair grey.

yeah, it's expensive though. you're lucky, i wish my mom wanted be to go blonde and would pay for it! Any ways, try something different like blonde highlights in your red hair, or red highlights in blonde hair. OH! you know what would be hott?! Blonde hair and bright red underneath!

Good luck!

I had my hair a really dark red/brown and wanted to go back blonde. I had tried doing it myself when I was younger but it KILLED my hair! Plus it was orange and yellow! This time I went to a salon and my hair is now blonde (not yellow or orange) and it still feels like hair! It took four processes but I think the stuff they used was nowhere near has harsh as storebought product. I would definitely recommend going to the salon if you do decide to change your color.

You need to check this out with a hairdresser but I believe you are right and there are no products that will you turn you blonde without bleach. Why not go back to your natural colour.

Is my mum right about my hair colour?

no, i don't think she's right. i could understand if she wanted you to keep your natural colour, but telling you to go blonde, i think, is wrong because:

a) she's basically saying your colour doesn't suit you, and i don't think it's very mum-like of her...she's supposed to motivate you!

b) blonde is a bimbo colour. not natural blonde, but most people who dye their hair blonde give the "wannabe" impression.

c) it's likely that if your natural colour is brown, blonde won't suit you.

d) it's YOUR hair.

by the way: how do you find a way to make all your clothes combine with your bright red hair? lol, good luck with mum.

Some girl said in a question I answered said that she heard of some shampoo that will do that but I've never heard of it. If it was me, I wouldnt change it for anyone but myself. If I absolutely loved it, then I'll keep it. I wouldnt do it for my mom because sometimes they try and make us do thing they wouldnt or couldnt do. Thats not right. I know you want her proud of you and you want her to be happy but if you make her happy will you be happy with yourself? If it suits you, and everyone else likes it, dont do it unless you really do wanna change. I would just say go to your mom and talk to her. Ask her why she wants it that way, and tell her that you're happy with your hair this way. I think they would be happy and supportive if their kids are happy.
